The Canadian holds the title: “Best Dressing Room Comedy!”

While doin’ the norm -trying on a selection of pre-shopped goodies-I asked him if he liked to dance. He replied, “Yes.” I asked, “What kind of dance?”, to which he replied by throwing his hands in the air and shakin’ his booty (in quick, precise movements)….”You know dance club kinda dancin’!”

We laughed so loud and for so long!!! Guess you had to be there?!

(Note to self:  Don’t laugh at clients….)

….Fortunately, we accomplished his head-to-toe objectives:  Created an understated,  sporty, and preppy wardrobe for his social life + a carry on wardrobe for travel to the tropics.

A gal on Uniquely Savvy’s fb business page posted that she hates the dressing room.  When I asked her why she wrote that it’s depressing, nothing fits, is a waste of time, and she winds up leaving.

…….I think we all can relate, right?  Guys and gals both have expressed this frustration.  If this is you, below are some tips to eliminate the hate factor.  Let us know if you want the road map specific to what looks amazing on your unique frame….we call it your STYLE GPS – it easily helps you step into your own savviness!  Oh, and if you are unsure of your personal statement of style, whether it’s city chic, professional with a sporty flare, sophisticated with an executive presence, or mommy-on-the-go – our PERSONAL BRAND/STYLE COMPASS is sure to guide you on your way!

Here are some good tips to get you started:

• Having a plan, prioritized shopping list, budget, and a strategic list of stores to shop will greatly reduce the “hate” factor in the dressing room.

• Before you set out to shop,  I recommend having a solid foundation of knowledge which leads to:  Confidence in the shopping process, time and money savings, a more gentle approach on self-esteem in the dressing room, and success that pays off daily!

If you:

1.  ” KNOW”  the best silhouettes/cuts for your body, it reduces the stress that “things just don’t look right on you” and reduces the time consumed in “getting undressed, then redressed, then undressed, then redressed”!  Why?  You can go into a store and shop the whole place confidently looking for the silhouettes that flatter, skip over the things that you now “know”  won’t, and enter the dressing room 1 time – far more efficient this way.

2. “KNOW” and are confident about your own personal style vs. just the “trends”, you will pass over styles you don’t really love.  The urge to try (or buy) something that a salesperson or your best friend suggests just because it’s” in” is eliminated by the  ownership of your own personal style.  (That said, I encourage you to think outside the box – don’t get stuck in a rut.  As you evolve on the inside, your personal style will evolve on the outside….)

3. “KNOW” your priorities… when you have a small window of time due to the kids or what have you, you can work your priority list and get what you need…first. Even if you only have 30 minutes to yourself, this will create focus -  in the dressing room and will pay off daily as you now will have the most important thing you need right in your closet. Try it, this is often how I shop for myself…by priority and in small bits of time.

The benefit? Often, my clients who “hate”, come to “love” – after getting coached on best practices for themselves.  The downer for me?  I work myself right out of another job – LOL!

Just read a piece on how to give your closet-staple oxford a fresh take for spring, and this was one of the pics.  I’m drawn to the line design that this look offers.  Smart, crisp, fresh.

What’s tricky; however, is that there are simply too many style elements that my brain is trying to take in! While I’m a fan of mixing concepts to bring in something unexpected, in this case I’m having a hard time trying to figure out what I should be focusing on.  You?

TO NOTE:

• There are 7 different hues in this outfit, to include understated fashion colors and a mix of neutrals.  Tip:  When having fun with color,especially the color block trend, stick to 3 colors, four at most.

• Stripes, leopard, metallic.  L-O-V-E that her style personality is so versatile and fun!  Tip:  While you likely have several layers of your style personality, when creating your outfit, try to create an overall story line, feel or mood.  Stripes are sporty, leopard is glam, metallic is luxe…Then we have a leather belt and chunky textured bracelets to consider?

At a glance, the net read of the “style” is sporty chic, but it almost gets lost in translation with too many colors, textures, patterns, and concepts.  Once last tip:  Consider modifying just one or two things to incorporate better flow.  For instance, if you wanna rock mixed prints go for the stripes and spots, but keep everything else simple.

Happy Birthday to the Space Needle!

Was honored to present on the 1962 World’s Fair history and fashion (cocktail and formal wear) for a private soiree….It was mostly focused on the women (sorry guys…), and I thought it’d be fun to share a few pics from the program.

Doing the research both historically and stylistically was far more inspiring and fun than I ever thought it would be….Thanks to our past government officials and World’s Fair Board, Seattle got put on the world’s map for science, technology and beyond…..There were nay sayers, bumps in the road, and setbacks, but what I learned is:  They had vision, tenacity, determination, and…desire.  They were a quality bunch and they made it happen profitably – something that’s uncommon for putting on a World’s Fair.

…From head to-toe, we cruised a variety of stores to teach, coach, and empower this professional woman in knowing how to dress her beautiful shape and her personal style!

Pop of color?  Absolutely, but which ones????  The goal is to express with the colors that harmonize with your hair, eyes, and skin tones.  Bright blue is a hue that’s trending for spring, but which bright blue is a hit for you?  Do you look best in matte bright blue or one with a sheen?  A cool bright blue, or a warm one?  (Both of these images popped up “bright blue”, yet bright blue is translated quite differently among individuals, stores, and designers. )

Tip:  Before you buy, hold the color next to your face. Does it highlight dark circles, wrinkles, acne? If so, it’s not the color for you.  No worries, perhaps a different shade in the color family is right for you.   But don’t settle, you were fashioned to sparkle and shine in your best colors!

Prints are a key trend:  Showed her the scale and size of prints that were best for her individual shape.

Tip:  Choose patterns to celebrate and balance your nature shape. For instance, where your features are angular, avoid geometric prints and opt for circles, florals, soft patterns instead.

Line Design:  Your wardrobe is an investment in yourself and your career and this professional wanted to invest in pieces that looked fab on…her…from a design perspective.  For instance, we looked at mandarin collars – but opted out.  While the color and shape were beautiful, the style of the neck broadened wide shoulders.   The ruffles on this example add even more volume to an already widening neckline and bust line area.)

Tip:  Be intentional about why and how you make your purchases.  Isn’t dressing about the expression of YOU? Ensure the pieces you don celebrate the best of you from color, to design, to pattern, and of course….your personal brand message!

Fashion Freedom!  Who wants it?

One of my passions lies in helping individuals discover their authentic selves so that they  gain confidence to express who they truly are in style, word, & action.   Monday night I was honored to share “3 Steps to Fashion Freedom” with MOPS moms for their annual “Night of Pamper.”  The best part of the night?  Seeing these fabulous moms light up in their own personal “aha” moments!   …Here’s a quick peek at the night in review.

Step 1. Know Yourself

Take time to discover who you are at your authentic core.  In my co-authored book, “Incredible Life”, I write, “Stop comparing yourself to others.  No one else is like you.  When you know who you are authentically and give yourself to “be”, you naturally feel more comfortable and confident in your own skin and allow others the freedom to do the same.”

• What’s unique about you, your personality, your skills, talents, or abilities?
• What inspires you?
• What core values guide you and your choices?
• What elements of style excite you?

Can we tell a bit about who you are by the way you dress?  Are you dressing as a reflection of your authentic self or just trying to keep up with trends ‘n friends?  One of the benefits of fashion freedom:  Freed up mind space.   I invite you to give yourself permission to BE & take ownership of who YOU are and have fun as your personal style spectacularly evolves!

…We spent some good time here before we got to styling.  Why should you care about such things?  I like to say, you can only be as beautiful and free on the outside as you are on the inside.  The best personal style comes from a place of discovering and “knowing” yourself on the inside and dressing in alignment on the outside.
